Happy 233rd Birthday America – I think I’ll celebrate with a race.

I have been dying for a 4th of July race. Apparently it’s one of the biggest racing days of the year – but I’ve had a hard time finding one…until now! I live in DC – you would think that there would be, like, 10 races on the 4th. I mean, shit happens here. I’ve got Barack on block and G. Washington on the other (or at least a couple of paintings of the 1st Prez). This place is no joke – and one would think that my fellow Americans would want to celebrate the Nation’s Capital with a little run. I guess not… But after literally days of website stalking, I FINALLY found a race. And an 8k, no less! I’m pumped. Plus, I can’t wait to see how fast I can run – I’ve never raced an 8k before. This weekend is going to be awesome.

Is anyone else running race on the 4th?? Take a look at races around your area: http://www.active.com/running/fourth-of-july/

Happy (early) 4th of July – and Happy Birthday America!!

On a [hilarious] side note: BJ thinks I’ve gone “race crazy” ie: I want to sign up for every race within 100 miles of DC. And unfortunately for him, that’s about 98.999% accurate. He told me: “I just want to sleep in some mornings.” He makes me sound like an evil, overbearing wife who never lets her husband sleep in – and we aren’t even married. Yet.

Okay, sorry BJ, I’ll stop asking you to run every single race with me…

  1. Celebrating with a race is a genius idea. There aren't any close enough to me that seem worth it. Plus, I started training for a marathon so I don't want to throw any kinks into the plan.

    Have fun and happy fourth!!

  2. I love the 4th of july races! 🙂 I normally run the firecracker 5 mile around here, but i'm going to be out of town! I'll take a look at that website and see if i can see one thats in the area where i'll be! Good luck!

  3. That is indeed strange…given that DC is the fittest city in all of the US and there are runners everywhere there (I know 'cause I was just there 2 weeks ago…)

I'm glad you found one though. I think it's pretty awesome that you'll get to run on July 4th…what a great way to celebrate the holiday!

Hove you have a great 8k and a happy 4th!

  4. Sounds like a great way to kickstart the fourth to me! I agree with you and your husband-to-be: it's so fun to race but it is also sooo nice to sleep in sometimes 🙂 Someone should direct a race that starts at noon!

  5. I ran a 4th of july race two years ago but its turns out its too close to my annual 15k race the next weekend so I dont really fully recover. Glad you found a race at least!

  6. KK – I love your idea! A noon race would be fabulous (and then BJ would ALWAYS race with me)!!

    Have a great 4th!

  7. Good luck on your race! I am officially in marathon training mode and can't get in a race this weekend. I am however planning my 12 miler through downtown to people/firework watch. Have a great 4th and again, good luck!

  8. I will definitely be finding a race to run next 4th of July!

  9. Since it's your first 8K, you'll PR no matter what! Good luck!

  10. Great July 4th race is Boogies Diner 5 mile run in Aspen, Colorado. It is a beautiful place, and a great race for a great cause. Good luck!

  11. Happy 4th of July! Have fun at the race!

  12. Nice to see such enthusiasm! Go for it, try to maintain your 5K pace for 8 klicks… Even if you bonk in the last mile, it will still be a PR. I'll have to check out your race, used to live in Mclean years ago, still get back to DC every now and then. Love the area, just not the cab ride from Dulles to downtown for which you have to take out a 2nd mortgage.

I 'have' to run a race on the 4th of July, it is like a tradition, even here in the 90+F heat of Houston. My wife and I will be lining up for a 5K at 0730a, and I sure as sh*t want to improve on last year's time of 22:16.

BTW I have also gone race crazy since I quit running marathons. We drove almost 300 miles roundtrip a couple of weeks ago to go and run a 5K in Lockhart, TX. Nuts.
