TriTown USA

Think your’e Type A? Welcome to the club.

If you are a triathlete, especially in the Washington D.C. area, this article is for you: “Triathlons in Washington: Why Tri?” It’s an interesting look at the sport of triathlon, most specifically in D.C.

“The Mid-Atlantic has the highest concentration of triathletes in the country. With two triathlons a year—and enough type-A personalities to fill them up—DC might be the epicenter.”

D.C. – dubbed TriTown USA by aficionados – has been named the fittest city in America by Forbesmagazine for the past three years. So, it comes as no surprise, that a city full of Type-A’s and fittest-people thrive in the sport of triathlon.

I’m a ‘part-time’ triathlete, meaning that I love the sport of running first and don’t take triathlons too seriously, but tend to agree with a lot of points in the article. While I’m not even close to being a local Maggie Shapiro-esque hero, I like the challenge of triathlon and use my competitive (read: type-A) personality to fuel me.

Are you a triathlete? Are you Type-A? What do you think about this article?

  1. I'm a type A when it comes to working out.. new triathlete!! Woot!

  2. Great article and I love the suggested the relationship between income and being able to afford being a triathlete. I haven't been compelled down this road yet….personally, if I am going to swim I want to be SCUBA diving. But I am indeed a Type-A. Sorry dear hubby….it is me!

  3. Very cool article. It doesn't surprise me at all that DC is full of Type-A's. btw, I just took a job that's based out of DC so I'll be traveling there quite a bit. I'm looking forward to it.

  4. It's a nice article, and I definitely think there is a large presence of triathletes (actually – athletic people in general) in the area, which is also why the DC metro area was ranked #2 in the country: http://www.wtop.com/?nid=41&sid;=2395713

However, DC is far from Tri-Town USA, as the article tries to state. What about Boulder, CO or Tuscon, AZ that are home to so many professionals (and not just triathletes, but runners, cyclists, etc)? It's great for DC to be recognized for its popularity of the sport, but wouldn't dare say DC has nearly enough history in the sport to consider it Tri-Town USA.

  5. Ha, now I know why I'm not a triathlete. I'm type B+. A few years ago, I would say I was type A-, but even then, I had no desire to do triathlons. Good thing because it's not in my budget anyway. Go Type A's! I'll cheer you on…

  6. I am so not a Type A. I'm more like a Type C…just go with the flow and see what happens! (this could also explain why I am not a triathlete…)

  7. I used to be type A about working out, but having a baby has forced me to be more laid back.

I'd be down with triathlons if they got rid of that nasty swim part and that pesky biking thing. 🙂
